The Iranian and American delegations held their first round in Oman on Saturday, with Oman’s foreign minister acting as mediator.
Saturday’s exchange between Tehaan and Washington was indirect and mediated by Oman. Each delegation had a separate room and exchanged messages through the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragut said his delegation had a brief encounter with Witkov’s US counterparts after they had finished consultations.
“After the end of more than 2-1/2 hours of indirect consultations, the head of the Iranian and American delegations spoke for a few minutes before the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Oman when they left the consultation. The encounter was based on our political etiquette.”
Araghchi said the consultation took place in a “productive, calm and positive atmosphere.”
“Both sides agreed to continue discussions…perhaps next Saturday,” Araguchi added. “Iran and the US want a deal in the short term. We don’t want to meet for the meeting.”
Commenting on the negotiations, US officials confirmed that the talks were constructive, and US President Donald Trump said talks with Iran would be fine.
Officials from various states also responded to the historic events by publishing statements.
Jordan
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry welcomed Oman hosting a high-level consultation between the US and Iran.
In a statement on Saturday, Ministry spokesman Sufian Kuda expressed his support for the Kingdom for diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts through dialogue and strengthen regional and international peace and security.
Egypt
In a statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the launch of negotiations between Iran and the United States and evaluated the role of Omani mediation in facilitating these consultations.
He also praised the constructive and collaborative approach of Iranian and American aspects to find political solutions through dialogue and negotiation.
Cairo added that he believes the road could lead to a balanced agreement and reduce tensions in the region.
Bahrain
Bahrain’s Foreign Ministry also issued a statement in response to Oman-sponsored consultations with Iran, expressing hope that this step will lead to enhanced peace, security and stability at the regional and international levels.
The Bahrainian government has also welcomed hosting high-level consultations in Oman between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States.
He also expressed Bahrain’s support for initiatives based on resolving conflicts and conflicts through peaceful means.
Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC)
Jasim al-Budaiwi, executive director of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC), welcomed the hosting of talks between Iran’s Islamic Republic and the United States by the Sultan of Oman on Saturday.
In a statement, Al Budaiwi said the hosting of Omani consultations reflects a sensible approach to building a bridge of dialogue and understanding between the nations and a consistent commitment to supporting and strengthening the security and stability of the region.
He said that PGCC countries are constantly seeking peaceful resolution to conflicts through strong and close ties with other countries, and are dedicated to presenting initiatives that serve the interests of the local people and the world at large.
Al Budaiwi expressed his hope that these constructive consultations would have positive consequences of opening a new horizon for cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, helping to the safety and stability of the region.
Iraq
The Iraqi Foreign Minister expressed support for indirect talks between Iran and the United States in Oman, and expressed Baghdad’s hopes for regional peace and stability.
Kuwait
Kuwait is welcoming Oman to host high-level consultations between the US and Iran, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday, hoping that the discussion will contribute to improving peace, security and stability in the region.
The ministry praised Oman’s efforts in this area and reiterated Kuwait’s support for diplomatic resolution to regional and international conflicts.
Saudi Arabia
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed the welcome of Riyadh, the host of the Sultan of Omani consultations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, affirmed the support of the Kingdom to adopt these efforts and dialogue, and supported it as a means of resolving all regional and international conflicts.
The Kingdom has expressed its desire that the outcomes of Iranian-American consultations will contribute to strengthening joint efforts to strengthen regional and global security, stability and peace.
Qatar
Qatar welcomes consultations held between the United States of Muscat and the Islamic Republic of Iran, and praises the positive spirit mediated by the Omani sister Sultans and held by them, as well as the constructive role played by the Sultans of the Katari Foreign Ministry.
As part of an unwavering belief in the importance of strengthening security, peace, stability and development at both the regional and international levels, we acknowledged the full status of Qatar’s support for a diplomatic and dialogue approach to solving all the notable issues between the US and Iran.
Russia
Mikhail Ulinov, Russia’s permanent representative of the Vienna-based international organization, described the results of the US Iran consultations on the nuclear program on Saturday as “reliable.”
“The outcome of today’s conference in Oman was explained by both Iranians and Americans as positive and constructive in the negotiations, which is encouraging,” he wrote in the telegram.
