Tehran – “The Best Years of A Life” is a 2019 drama film by French filmmaker Claude Lelouch, which was reviewed on Friday during a session at the Iranian Artist Forum (IAF) Cinematec.
The film was screened and then a review session continued.
“The Best Years of a Life” (Les Plus Belles Annéesd’Une Vie) is remarkable as Lelouch’s 49th installment, and serves as the third article in his “Un Homme et Une Femme” series, following the highly acclaimed classic from the 1966 and 1986 sequels. The film was featured at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 and was selected as the official horse competition section, highlighting the importance of modern films.
The story centers around Jean Louis Durock, played by Jean Louis Trintning, a former charming racing driver who currently lives in a nursing home in Valenzville Schulmer in Normandy. As an Oxtronarian facing the Twilight of his life, Jean Louis is a dream of dreams that rekindled his past and his youth’s love, Anne Gautier is portrayed by Anouk Amy.
Their love story dates back more than 52 years, when they meet at a boarding school in Deauville, where children Antoine and Françoise also studied. The film beautifully captures an emotional reunion organized by his son Antoine, and is filled with touching moments along with nostalgic references such as scenic Normandy landscapes, the beaches of Deauville, Vintage Telegram, old phone numbers, and classic cars.
The technical aspects of the film include scripts with music by Francis Rye and Caroguero, contributing to a nostalgic and romantic atmosphere. The cast also features Marianne Denicourt, Souad Amidou, Monica Bellucci and Tess Lauvergne.
Critics took the film aggressively, receiving a score of 3.4 out of 5 at Arocine and a favorable review from the premiere and Terrerama, praised his best Lelouch direction in nearly 20 years. The film was filmed in Normandy and Paris in late 2018, and Lelouch personally built the setting of a retirement home for authenticity.
As a moving homage to love and aging, “The Best Year of Life” continues Lelouch’s legacy of exploring human connections, making a major addition to “unhomme et une femme” saga, and an inspiring reflection on the enduring passions of life.
