“It won’t happen because I made a promise to the Arab countries. And it can’t happen now. We’ve had a lot of support from the Arabs. It won’t happen because I made the promise to the Arab countries. It won’t happen.
If that happens, Israel will lose all support from the United States,” he told Time in response to a question about what the consequences would be if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government annexed the West Bank.
Trump also said that the situation in the Middle East would improve under his leadership, but that it could all easily come to an end if he is succeeded by a president who doesn’t command respect.
“Things are going to get better and better and stronger and perfect while I’m there. You know what? It’s going to be great. What’s going to happen after me? I can’t say that. You know, there can be a bad president. If you have a bad president, it could end very easily. If they respect the president, it will be a long and beautiful peace,” he said.
In September, the US president said he would not recognize Israel’s annexation of the West Bank of the Jordan River. The Axios portal, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, reported that the White House had made it clear to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that continuing the conflict in the Middle East would only further isolate Israel.
