Hunger is imminent in Gaza, with 500,000 people at risk of starvation unless Israel lifts its siege. A tough new report released on Monday by the global hanger monitor shows significant deterioration since the last report in October.
The Integrated Food Security Stage Classification (IPC), a global network of UN agencies and humanitarian groups, reported Monday that 477,000 people, or 22% of Gaza’s population, faced “devastating” hunger from May to September.
More than a million people are at an “urgent” level characterized by serious food gaps and high-grade malnutrition.
“The current levels of human suffering, poverty and harm are extreme and urgent action is required from all involved,” the IPC said in the report.
The IPC warned that hunger is imminent if current conditions persist. The ongoing Israeli lockdown has been at the facility since March 2nd, and has severely restricted the invasion of essential food and medical supplies into Gaza.
