The detention of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamolu led to headlines in Türkiye and around the world on Wednesday.
Turkish journalist and analyst Mustafa Kemal Eldemor told Mehr in an interview that his illegal arrests would affect Turkish politics.
“The political consequences of this development will be significant, but most importantly, the voter’s response. Ekrem Imamolu has been treated unfairly, and this sentiment may have occurred in the past. However, the dominant justice and development party has rejected this defeat, and in the second round, when the Turks cheate, they respond to the party’s party. Significantly.”
“For Tiat’s reasons, the CHP has repeatedly called for early elections, while Imamol has announced that he will run for president.
“This situation has led the AKP to commit illegal activities known to everyone. In fact, Erdogan, the leader of this party, is law, so there is no lawlessness. For example, Imamoru’s bachelor’s degree, which he received 35 years ago, was invaded, and the university president did not decide to resign from his degree. It is a clear violation of his rights, and it has greatly angered society.”
“The ruling AKP has lost an overwhelming majority of voters. Erdogan-led JAKP puts not only their rivals but all their opponents in prison,” Erdomor said.
“In Turkish politics, the AKP was formed in Turkish politics that it cannot maintain its power. The ruling Turkey party has lost legitimacy. Imamoguru has been nominated despite all these issues or someone else will likely win.
“Is it possible for the Istanbul Municipality to have guardians appointed by the government?” Eldemor said, “The AKP government has, for many years, operated all institutions that are opposed, particularly considered municipalities, and therefore may appoint guardians of the Istanbul Municipality.”
“This appointment of parents this time is a bit difficult for the ruling party, and there is still a strong response in the political and public community.”
“If Erdogan appointed guardians of Istanbul Municipality, his goal is to implement the Canal Istanbul Project, a project to destroy Istanbul. The Turkish courts have blocked this project from being implemented. Now the government can re-expand this project through the municipality.
“It is clear that this decision is purely political, as in every election held, Imamoguru won the government’s candidate. The government could not stop Imamoguru throughout the election, so he decided to attack him to prevent his political success,” Eldemor concluded.
