Tehran – Hadi Tahan Naziv, a legal scholar and spokesman for Iran’s Guardian Council, confirmed the retention of the council’s leadership next year.
Tahan Nazif has announced that the Council will continue with Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, whose secretary and Siamak Lapey remain as deputy secretary and who is continuing as a spokesman himself.
The reappointment follows an internal election held during the first session of the council, following the reappointment of three senior legal scholars by leaders of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seiedali Khamenei and the parliamentary approval of three legal experts.
Tahan Nazif confirmed the continuity of leadership and noted that elections are strictly adhered to Articles 23 and 24 of the Council’s internal bylaws mandating annual leadership elections.
As Iran’s constitutional watchdog, the 12 council holds important powers, with six lawyers appointed by leaders and six legal experts proposed by the judiciary and approved by the parliament.
The obligations include legislative reviews to ensure alignment between Islamic values and the constitution, candidates for all national elections, and election oversight.
