Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragci had a telephone conversation with British Foreign Secretary David Lamie on Thursday night to discuss bilateral relations, regional and international developments, and Iran’s nuclear issue.
Lammy has extended Nowruz and New Year’s greetings to Iran’s counterparts, reaffirming the UK and EU’s commitment to pursue a diplomatic resolution on Iran’s nuclear file. He also said he would soon discuss the issue with European and American officials.
Expressing his frustration over European non-constructive behavior, Aragut on his part criticised the continued sanctions against Iran under unfounded pretext. He urged three European countries to rethink their approach to regional issues in Iran and West Asia.
Iranian diplomats have repeatedly reiterated Iran’s willingness to engage diplomatically in relation to a peaceful nuclear program, but emphasized that direct negotiations under “maximum pressure” and “military threats” are pointless.
Referring to contradictory statements from US officials regarding consultations with Iran, he refused to use diplomacy as a tool of political and psychological pressure. He also confirmed that Iran responded to the US President’s letter through appropriate diplomatic channels.
Both sides welcomed the appointment of new ambassadors to London and Tehran, expressing their hope that it would promote smoother bilateral relations.
The discussion also addressed the issue of consuls, with both sides openly expressing concerns, while underscoring the importance of maintaining communication channels between Tehran and London for effective follow-up on bilateral and other mutual concerns.
