TEHRAN – Ayatollah Seiyedal Ali Khamenei, leader of the Islamic Revolution, celebrates the Iranian Greco-Roman wrestling team’s victory at the 2025 Wrestling World Championships held in Croatia, marking an unprecedented year for Iranian wrestling.
In a message issued on Sunday night, Ayatollah Khamenei praised the athletes for their dedication and hard work, saying, “Congratulations to the young wrestler. The determination and effort of you and your brothers in freestyle wrestling will make the country happy and proud of your country. I pray to God for your success and victory.
Iran’s Greco-Roman team won the championship title with an impressive medal tally, securing a victory earlier than expected. The victory concluded a 12-year drought with a record seven medals following the historic victory of an Iranian freestyle wrestler a few days ago.
Iran broke through the leaderboard with 145 points, surpassing Japan with 134 points and 111 points.
This surprising achievement is that for the first time in Iran’s wrestling history, both the freestyle and the Greco-Roman team have simultaneously secured the World Championship titles. The victory sparked national celebrations and renewed pride in the achievements of Iran’s sport.
