“In regards to President Donald Trump’s comments on Monday, Iran is ready to engage in earnest and enthusiastically to sign a contract. We will meet in Oman on Saturday for indirect negotiations,” Iranian diplomat Abbas Aragucci said in his contribution to the Washington Post on Tuesday.
He further explained that indirect negotiations are as much an opportunity as a test.
“The model of engagement we propose is not novel. The United States itself mediates indirect consultations between Russia and Ukraine. This is a much more intense and complicated conflict with strategic, territorial, military, security and economic aspects,” the minister recalled.
“I personally have also been in charge of indirect consultations with the US, mediated by the European Union in 2021. The process proved both potential and production, although more complicated and demanding than direct involvement.
“The pursuit of indirect negotiation is a strategic choice rooted in experience rather than ideological tactics or reflections. We faced a critical barrier of mistrust, and were exacerbated by the resumption of our “maximum pressure” policy.
