Prabowo was scheduled to attend the “Victory Day” parade held in China on September 3rd.
The protest, the government’s first major test almost a year ago, began this week in Jakarta about MPs’ pay, and worsened after police vehicles attacked and killed motorcycle riders.
“The president wants to continue to monitor (the situation in Indonesia) in person…and seeks the best solution,” President’s spokesman Prasetyo Hadi said in a video statement on Saturday.
“Therefore, the President apologized to the Chinese government for not being able to attend the invitation.”
Another consideration when canceling a trip was the UN General Assembly session in September, PraseTyo said.
In light of the protests, Tiktok, a short video app owned by China’s ordinance, said it had stopped live in Indonesia for several days on Saturday.
Jakarta this week summoned representatives of social media platforms, including Meta Platforms Inc (Meta.O), opening new tabs and Tiktoks, and instructing them to increase content moderation as Deolformation spreads online. The government says such disinformation has spurred protests against it.
