In 1977, the International Museum Council (ICOM) declared on May 18th that International Museum Day (IMD). This is based on the notion that museums could transform and raise awareness that “museums are an important tool for cultural exchange, cultural richness, and mutual understanding, cooperation and development of peace among people.
The IMD concept dates back to 1951, when ICOM convened the International Museum Community for the “Crusades for Museums” conference to investigate the issue of “Museums and Education.” This day was officially prepared in 1977, when the resolution approved by the ICOM General Assembly in Moscow was adopted.
This is marked worldwide with events that are in line with the themes declared by ICOM each year, and has been significantly and widespread on the day as more than 37,000 museums from 158 countries have participated in recent years over the past decade.
The chosen theme for 2025, observed on Sunday, May 18th this year, is “The Future of a Museum of Rapidly Changing Communities,” which rethinks the museum as a key connector, innovator and guardian of cultural identity.
It also highlights critical future talks on how museums can protect their intangible heritage, leverage the energy of young people, and adapt to new technology frontiers, paving the way for museums and communities to flourish in an age of rapid change.
