TEHRAN – Iran ruled out consultations with the US earlier this month five years after Washington withdrew from the deal, two years after signing in 2015.
However, according to Iran’s Deputy Minister Majid Tak e Ravanchi, Tehran is still involved with European states on some issues.
“The leaders of the Islamic Revolution have defined a general framework for negotiations that Iranian officials will follow,” the diplomat told Iraqi media. He showed that both sides are willing to continue these consultations, but he did not elaborate on their particular focus.
Since last year, there have been several discussions in Geneva and New York involving representatives from Iran, Germany, France, the UK and the EU. Analysts believe the future of the JCPOA, where Iran had restricted nuclear activity in exchange for sanctions relief, is probably the central topic. Tehran, Washington, Paris, London, Berlin, Beijing and Moscow were the original signatories of the contract.
The sanctions that Washington reimposed against Iran following his withdrawal from the JCPOA have prompted Iran to scale back some of its own commitments based on the deal. But more important than the potential recovery of the JCPOA is whether Iran will be forced to take more dramatic steps, and from October 18th, the day that the so-called snapback mechanism will expire. It depends on the decisions that must be made before.
This mechanism, outlined in UN Resolution 2231, allows for a re-challenge of all UN sanctions on Iran if other JCPOA signatories determine that the country is violating. In particular, there is no comparable mechanism to ensure Western compliance with the contract.
China and Russia are unlikely to cause a snapback as they say the US is to blame for the JCPOA’s lame condition. However, Europe has repeatedly used potential invocations of mechanisms to threaten Iran without addressing Washington or the avoidance of nuclear deals.
Iran has informed its European counterparts that it will consider withdrawing from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if a “snapback” mechanism is invoked.
The date for the next Iranian-European meeting has not yet been decided, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bakai said on Monday.
Seyed Jalal Sadatian, a former British envoy for Iran, said in Iranian media that its influence on the European international stage is declining and advised it to avoid further manipulation by the US. did
“In Ukraine, Europe has been forced to pour billions of dollars into military aid for Kiev and to separate the economy from Russia. Today, both Europeans and Ukrainians have been excluded from peace talks. “He told IRNA.
American and Russian officials convened in Riyadh on Tuesday to discuss the end of the Ukrainian War. They reportedly did not allow either Ukrainian or European trio to attend consultations, but Washington said they would be explained later.
Sadatian believes that Europeans have little interest in solving problems with Iran, and added that they will probably not blindly follow the US in regards to the JCPOA. “At least that’s a logical thing to do after everything that’s happened to them (the Europeans) over the past few years.”
