Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has denounced recent US sanctions targeting many individuals and corporations related to Iran’s energy, oil and gas sectors, as well as those who are active in the country’s peaceful nuclear program.
Baghaei described the US policy of imposing sanctions on Iranian people as a clear indication of Washington’s hostile approach to Iranian people and its neglect of the rule of law and human rights.
He added that the US administration’s structural dependence on economic sanctions on developing countries, which are used as tools of intimidation and political pressure, is in violation of the UN Charter and fundamental principles of international law.
A senior Iranian diplomat further said such measures weakened the rule of law and the foundation of free trade and severely violated the basic human rights, particularly the development rights of those under sanctions. In many cases, he argued that these sanctions were considered crimes against humanity.
He added that the ongoing imposition of sanctions on various sectors of Iran’s economy and trade is an illegal and bullied act that directly contradicts the US’s claims that it seeks dialogue and negotiation. This clearly shows the lack of goodwill and severity on the part of the United States, he stressed.
Baghey concluded by emphasizing that these unilateral sanctions on Iranian people are inconsistent with the core principles of international law. So he said, they are accompanied by international legal liability in the United States, which must be liable for serious human rights violations arising from such criminal proceedings.
