TEHRAN – The Iranian embassy in Tokyo has criticized the allegations of leveling Tehran in a joint statement by the British and Japanese defense ministers as “basically unfounded,” and dismissed Iran’s claims of support for Russia in the war with Ukraine.
A joint statement issued in Tokyo on Friday after a meeting between the British Secretary of Defense and his Japanese counterparts emphasized what it described as “deep strategic alignment” to tackle security challenges. Among the points raised were repeated Western claims that Iran provided military support to Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. Tehran has stated that it is politically motivated and decisively false.
In a statement, the Iranian Embassy in Tokyo declared: “The Islamic Republic Embassy in Iran is strongly condemning the unfounded allegations filed in the 2025 joint statement by the British and Japanese Ministers of Defense against Iran.
The embassy urged Western governments to rethink their role in spurring the crisis. “Iran is urging the Western countries that have exacerbated this conflict to end illegal interventions and focus on peace rather than blaming others.”
Tehran repeatedly denied Western accusations of providing drones or other weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine, and described the claims as part of a broader campaign to distract attention from NATO’s involvement in the conflict. Iranian officials instead emphasize the need for diplomacy and political dialogue to end the war.
