Speaking at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Institute of Political and International Studies on Monday, Esmail Bagay said the current state of world affairs reflects the failure of some major powers to uphold the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter.
He said the United Nations was founded “on the ashes of a devastating world war” as a reminder of humanity’s painful experience and a commitment to preventing such tragedies from happening again.
“This is not the time to retreat or be passive. We believe in justice. We believe in the United Nations, which truly represents the rights of nations,” he declared.
He said the United Nations’ primary mission of maintaining international peace and security was being undermined by the unilateral and selfish actions of a few powerful countries.
He pointed out that the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter have been distorted and violated, particularly by those who are supposed to be their guardians within the Security Council.
Bagai accused the United States and some of its allies of being the “biggest violators” of the United Nations Charter, pointing to their support for Israel’s ongoing war against the Palestinians.
“Over the past two years, the Israeli regime has launched military attacks and committed acts of terrorism against several countries, with the full support and complicity of the United States and some European countries, while committing one of the largest ongoing genocides in history in the occupied Palestinian territories.”
The spokesperson also condemned U.S. policy in Latin America, saying that U.S. interference and threats against Venezuela, Cuba and other countries violate international law and peace.
Baghai stressed that Iran has always been a “firm supporter of peace, justice, human dignity and friendly relations between nations” and continues to act as a responsible member of the United Nations despite decades of prejudice and unfair treatment.
Reaffirming Iran’s commitment to multilateralism, he said: “We have never considered the United Nations to be a powerless institution, and we have never threatened it. Let us renew our commitment to building a United Nations that can prevent the scourge of war for present and future generations.”
