TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres held a telephone conversation to discuss recent regional developments, focusing on the ongoing crises in Gaza and Yemen.
According to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aragushi stressed that it is the responsibility of the international community to prevent Israel from continuing to violate the ceasefire in Gaza and ensure the smooth delivery of humanitarian aid to residents of the enclave.
Addressing the situation in Yemen, Alaghushi condemned Israel’s attack on the country and reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to cooperate with the United Nations to promote stability in Yemen and strengthen regional security.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Guterres praised Iran’s diplomatic efforts to support peace and stability in the region and stressed the importance of continued talks to restore calm in Yemen and beyond.
According to the Gaza Government Media Office, at least 97 Palestinians have been killed and 230 injured since the Gaza ceasefire took effect on October 10, bringing the total number of casualties and injuries to more than 68,000 and more than 170,000 injured in the conflict since October 2023.
Hamas official Khalil al-Haya reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to fully implement the terms of the Sharm el-Sheikh-brokered ceasefire, including handing over remaining Israeli prisoners and regaining control of Gaza to the Palestinian Authority. He expressed confidence in the guarantees provided by mediators and friendly countries amid concerns that Israel might renege on the agreement.
The New York Times reported that several former Trump administration officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance, regional envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, expressed concern that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would abandon the deal and warned that the situation was “very sensitive.” President Trump himself reportedly dismissed Israel’s claims of Hamas violations.
Observers note that Israel has previously violated similar agreements, including initial cease-fires and prisoner exchanges, while continuing aggressive military operations that have had a disproportionate impact on Palestinian civilians.
The conflict has also been exacerbated by Israeli airstrikes in Yemen, an act widely condemned as a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter.
