Haidar Ali Bulge, director of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Disarmament and Arms Control Department, spoke at a working group meeting on strengthening the treaty of the Prohibition of Biological Weapons (BWC) in Geneva on Monday.
Referring to active, direct and deliberate attacks on Israeli vaccines, medicine and health production facilities and other similar centres in Iran, Baluji condemned the action as a clear violation of the fundamental principles of international law and treaty.
On June 13, Israel launched an unprovoked war with Iran, assassinating many high-ranking military commanders, nuclear scientists and ordinary civilians.
On June 24, Iran finally managed to halt the war through retaliation operations against the Israeli regime.
Baluzi also warned that these attacks would jeopardize regional and global biosecurity, in addition to damaging national capabilities in the field of public health.
He emphasized that attacks on peaceful biological facilities violate the fundamental rights of member states to the peaceful use of biological sciences and constitute an attack on the entire global disarmament regime.
Iranian diplomats firmly condemned these actions and called on the international community to hold perpetrators accountable.
The Working Group on Enhancement of the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological Weapons was established with the decision of the 9th Review Council in 2022. Its key focus areas include developing international cooperation and support, assessing related scientific and technological advances, and investigating validation mechanisms. We will continue to operate until at least the end of 2026.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Barouj emphasized the importance of support for BWC’s global partnership, particularly in West Asia.
