The council on Thursday narrowly approved a resolution drafted by the European troika (France, Germany and Britain) and the United States, calling on Tehran to report “without delay” on its enriched uranium stockpile and facilities damaged in June’s invasion by Israel and the United States, without making any mention of the two countries’ long-standing cooperation, by a vote of 19 to 3, with 12 abstentions.
The ministry said in a statement that the move is also evidence that the US and European troika are abusing the agency to increase pressure on Iran.
The ministry said the resolution was rejected by about half of the IAEA member states, including the two permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The ministry said the resolution violates fundamental principles of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which gives member states the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
The ministry stressed that the council does not have the authority to reinstate expired UN Security Council resolutions and accused the United States and its European allies of acting in “bad faith” and irresponsible behavior.
Furthermore, the ministry warned that insistence on repeating these measures could lead to legal confusion, exacerbate divisions within international organizations, and undermine the foundations of the non-proliferation regime.
The ministry said that if the US and European troika insist on reinstating these resolutions, the credibility of the non-proliferation regime and international institutions will be undermined.
The agency said the resolution does not even recognize direct military aggression by the United States and Israel as a reason for suspending the agency’s inspections of Iran.
The ministry stressed that Iran has never sought to produce nuclear weapons and that Israel and its nuclear weapons pose the main threat to international peace and security.
The report emphasized that the United States and three European countries are complicit in Israel’s crimes across the region by ignoring the regime’s risks and insisting that they seek to find fault with Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.
The ministry concluded by stating that it will spare no effort to protect the rights and interests of the Iranian state regarding the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
