In a statement on Sunday, Fatemeh Mohajerani, a government spokeswoman for President Masoud Pezeshkian, declared on Monday the day of national mourning after the tragic explosion at Shahid Rajaee port in Bandar Abbas and subsequent fires.
Meanwhile, Pezeshkian arrived in the capital of Hormozgan province Bandar Abbas on Sunday afternoon to inspect rescue operations and receive an explanation of the latest developments after yesterday’s big explosion.
The president visited several of the injured people at the hospital in Bandar Abbas on Sunday afternoon.
Three days of mourning has been declared in the province of Hormozgan, where Bandar Abbas is the regional capital.
Iranian authorities said the fire had been contained by Sunday afternoon. The port has been working since yesterday, right after the explosion. The tragic explosion at Shahid Rajaee port has so far killed at least 28 people and injured more than 800 people.
Shahid Rajaei (Rajaee) is the largest and most modern port of Iran.
Iran’s Red Crescent Association said in its latest statistics on the incident released Sunday afternoon that 28 people were killed and 1,242 others were injured.
Of the total number of injured people, 240 have been admitted to hospitals in Holmozgan and seven from nearby Shiraz hospitals in Fars state have been admitted, Red Crescent said.
