Iran used the global platform of the Fourth International Conference for Development to condemn the recent US military attacks on Israeli and Iranian soils, linking them to a wider problem of fraud in the international financial system. Tehran’s message combines a strong geopolitical warning with an appeal for systematic economic reform in favor of developing countries.
In a written statement read aloud by the Iranian ambassador to Spanish Reza Zabib, Iranian President Masuud Pezeschkian described joint military attacks by Israel and the United States as a fundamental principle of blatant violations of the UN Charter, non-enhancing treaties and international law.
Pezeschkian said such actions undermine multilateralism and international norms, and he urged UN member states to condemn illegal assault. He further emphasized that forced unilateral measures, such as US sanctions, were obstacles to the right to development of a nation, and that they defined it as a fundamental human right that the nation should not be taken away from.
He also criticized structural inequality within international financial institutions, arguing that developing countries are often excluded or underestimated in their decision-making processes. He called for urgent reforms to create a more equitable financial order that empowers the global South.
While reading the president’s message, Ambassador Zabib chaired one of the conference sessions, taking photos of dozens of Iranian children killed in the Israeli attacks. He emphasized that the strikes that have taken lives and wounded thousands of civilians represent not only military attacks but humanitarian catastrophes.
The fourth international conference on fundraising for development was held in Seville, Spain on Monday, and was attended by senior officials and heads of state from over 150 countries. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres gave a keynote speech.
President Pezeshkian was scheduled to attend in person, but cancelled his trip due to a recent Israeli invasion. Instead, his message was conveyed by Ambassador Reza Zabib, highlighting the importance imposed on Iran’s position to convey its international community amid growing geopolitical tensions.
