Tehran – The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has awarded the Iran Digital National Planning Project as one of the World Summits of the Information Association of Electronic Business Category (WSIS) Champion 2025.
The WSIS Award 2025 recognizes outstanding projects that use information and communication technology to promote the Sustainable Development Goals. The award focuses on projects along the WSIS action line and is presented in 18 categories including government roles, infrastructure, access to information, capacity building, and more.
Achievements are the result of the country’s ongoing efforts to use ICT to achieve its strategic goals for sustainable development and Iran’s digital transformation. It also demonstrates the country’s commitment to infrastructure development, promoting electronic services, and strengthening the digital economy at national and global levels.
The WSIS Forum, which includes the WSIS Awards 2025 Ceremony, will be held in Geneva from July 7th to 11th. The 18 WSIS Awards 2025 winners will be announced at the WSIS Awards ceremony along with 72 champion projects.
According to the World’s Alliance of Engineering and Engineers, the forum serves as a platform for multi-stakeholder discussions on the developments and challenges in building comprehensive and development-oriented information associations.
The National Digital Transformation Document is one of the ICT Ministry’s key programs developed to enhance the digital economy and transformation technology to address the country’s key issues.
This document focuses on three key aspects including empowerment, applications and effectiveness, aimed at improving the country’s key infrastructure in a variety of economic, social and cultural areas.
The main purpose of this document is to build digital infrastructure such as digital identity, data security and protection, digital literacy and skills, and transparency in access to digital data.
It also focuses on improving key metrics, such as e-government development, increasing internet penetration and promoting digital business.
ICT situation in Iran
The Ministry of Information and Communications Technology is the highest authority in the field of ICT in the country. All activities related to the Information and Communications Technology industry are directly related to the Ministry.
The government is paying special attention to the planning and policies of this sector to maximize the use of ICT to promote people’s lives.
The success of satellite design, construction and launching shows the growth of the country’s national technology and scientific capabilities.
Space technology is considered a tool for prosperity, peace, scientific and cultural development, and for expanding economic progress in human society.
Various countries around the world are utilizing this technology in some way based on their capabilities, capabilities and efforts.
Currently, 13 universities and research institutes belonging to the Ministry of Science and Research offer aerospace majors, so Iran has a high capacity to train professionals and experts in the aerospace sector, making it a major country in the region.
Access to communication services in the country’s rural areas has improved over the period as the total number of villages with communication services increased to 52,182 and 47,837 villages have access to home landline services.
Furthermore, the number of mobile users in Iran reached nearly 1358.9 million, according to the CRA, which brought mobile phone penetration to 161.67%.
However, the figure shows that fixed broadband adoption in Iran has stagnated at 14%, with roughly 119.21 million customers with access to the internet through those services.
The statistics show that fixed broadband internet has increased by less than 2% compared to last year, with mobile internet experiencing 10% growth. However, the speed of mobile internet expansion is five times faster than that of fixed internet.
