The Iranian Foreign Minister made the presentation after meeting his Russian counterpart.
Foreign Minister Abbas Aragut said Iran will not hold direct consultations on its nuclear program in President Donald Trump’s “maximum pressure” policy.
His remarks came a day after the US imposed new sanctions targeting Iran’s oil industry, the main source of revenue.
“Iran’s position on nuclear talks is clear and we will not negotiate under pressure and sanctions,” Aragi said in a televised joint press conference in Tehran on Tuesday with Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. I’ve said that.
“As long as maximum pressure is applied in this way, there is no possibility of direct negotiations with the US.”
After returning to the White House last month, Trump recovered his “maximum pressure” campaign in Iran. This includes efforts to drive the country’s oil exports to zero, rethinking the harsh policies on Iran that were put into practice throughout his first term.
Earlier this month, Iran’s biggest authority, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said talks with the US were “smart, wise, and unhonored.”
However, he stopped updating the ban on in-person talks with Washington during the first Trump administration.
In 2018, during his first term, Trump withdrew the US from the Iranian Landmark 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers that imposed curbs on Iran’s nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.
Iran has since violated some of its contract restrictions and efforts to revive an agreement that failed under the control of former US President Joe Biden.
On Monday, Iran held new talks with Germany, France and the UK on the nuclear program after reviving its involvement with the trio known as the E3 late last year.
Araghchi said he explained to Lavrov about the latest debate.
“We will work together and coordinate with friends from Russia and China on nuclear issues,” he added.
The Russian foreign minister is confident that diplomatic measures are still on the table when it comes to solving issues relating to Iran’s nuclear program, Iran’s national media reported.
As Russia also faces sanctions over war in Ukraine, Moscow and Tehran have been strengthening their relationship in recent years. The two countries invested in Syria and suffered a setback in December when longtime ally President Bashar al-Assad was removed.
Aragut said Iran and Russia’s position in Syria remained “very close.”
“Iran wants peace, stability, preserving territorial integrity and unity, and Syria’s progress based on the will of the people,” he said.
Lavrov said on his part that “we will do our best to ensure that the situation has settled down and that it does not pose any threat to the Syrian people or the neighboring people.”
A report from Tehran, Tohid Assadi of Al Jazeera, said the foreign minister was trying to portray “photos of a collaborative, cooperative and consistent position” on regional and bilateral issues.
“It also focused on the need to expand ties economically and politically, as well as the need to expand some of the measures that come with sanctions,” he said.
Lavrov’s visit to Iran comes days after we and our Russian officials held their first in-person meeting since the war began in Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister welcomed Trump’s “balanced” position on the war in Ukraine after Washington voted for Moscow in a UN resolution to avoid denounce Russian invasion on Monday .
“The events at the UN General Assembly and the Security Council yesterday showed such a significant impact. Understanding that an approach aimed at eliminating the root cause of a crisis is not an alternative. ” said Lavrov.
