Ghalibaf made the remarks during a meeting with Iraqi National Security Adviser Qasem al-Araji in Tehran on Tuesday.
“This MoU outlines the beginning of a vital move towards establishing sustainable security for both countries and the wider region,” he said.
Qalibaf also praised the “strong and multifaceted relationship” between Iran and Iraq, which includes political, economic, cultural, religious and especially security aspects.
He also expressed hope that the security agreement between Iran and Iraq can contribute to improving stability and deepening bilateral relations.
Ghalibaf highlighted the threat posed by the US-backed Israeli regime following recent events in the region. He emphasized the important role of Iran and Iraq among Islamic, Arab and non-Arab countries.
The Iranian parliament speaker also emphasized the importance of the security agreement in uniting against the existing dangers of the Islamic world.
“Today, we are not concerned about the dangers that exist on our borders, but seek greater and sustainable stability and security on our borders, prioritizing economic and cultural ties and regional influence.”
Ghalibaf said it is essential for Iran and Iraq to address broader economic ties, including transportation, industrial parks, and knowledge-based initiatives.
“We believe that Iran’s security and Iraq’s security are interconnected, and we abide by the security agreements we have signed with Iran, underscoring the need for continued talks,” Arazi said.
Prior to the meeting with the speaker of parliament, top Iraqi security officials met separately with Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme Security Council (SNSC), Foreign Minister Abbas Aragushi, and Major General Mohammad Pakpour of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
