Tehran launched a retaliatory strike against locations across Israel on Friday following Israeli attacks on Iran’s military and nuclear targets.
Iran said on Friday evening that local time had fired “hundreds of different ballistic missiles” at Israel.
“Some time ago, hundreds of different ballistic missiles were launched towards the occupying territories, and the operation of a decisive response to the Zionist regime’s savage attacks began,” IRNA, an official Iranian news agency, reported.
Following the barrage of hell, Israeli forces claimed that Iran fired less than 100 missiles towards Israel and landed “several hits.” Some of these hits came from fragments of the intercepted by Israeli Defence Force spokesman Effy Deflin.
The US helped Israel intercept Iran’s missiles on Friday evening, two Israeli sources told CNN. Other countries in the region have also supported Israeli air defense, one source said in a similar way how they had done in previous Iranian attacks on Israel.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said late Friday that Iran “crossed the red lines” by launching missiles at a civilian population centre, vowing to pay a “very heavy price” for its actions.
Smoke and explosions in Tel Aviv
During the attack, CNN teams in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem were able to hear the big explosion, and a Tel Aviv video showed rockets and smoke rising incoming inside the city’s skyscrapers.
Seven people were “lightly and moderately injured” after an Iranian strike struck at the border between Iranian Aviv and Israel’s Ramat Gan city, according to head of Israel’s emergency services, Eli Bin.
Approximately an hour after the strike began, authorities said Israelis could leave the bomb shelter.
CNN journalists evacuated with their neighbors about 100 metres from where the missile landed. As the projectiles affected, her group heard a noise similar to a jet engine, followed by a big explosion followed by a small explosion.
Images and videos released by Magen David Adom, an affiliate of the Israeli Red Cross, showed civil defense workers investigating the façades of broken cars and collapsed buildings in Central Israel.
The Iranian barrage came after Israel launched two major attacks on Iran early in the morning of local time.
The Israeli attacks, accompanied by years of threat and growing speculation, were executed without the blessings of Israel’s closest ally, the United States. The Trump administration emphasized that Israel was acting unilaterally and that Washington was “not involved.”
In a speech posted on Friday night, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke directly to the Iranians, saying that “the Israeli war is not against the Iranian people,” rather its government.
“More things are ongoing. The administration doesn’t know what hit them or what hit them. It’s never weakened,” Netanyahu said.
In April 2024, Iran fired more than 300 projectiles, including around 170 drones and over 120 ballistic missiles, at Israeli military, which were intercepted by Israeli air defense systems and their “partners.”
