“The people of Venezuela and the Bolivar government will hold elections for the Parliament, governor and local councils in a peaceful environment and congratulate the presence of more than 1,400 international observers,” the ministry said in a Spanish post in X.
“In these elections, the people of Venezuela have once again shown their participation in determining their political fate. We wish for the success and glory of the people of Venezuela and their elected representatives.”
President Nicolas Maduro’s Venezuela president, held the majority in Parliament on Sunday, securing 23 of the 24 governors, earning nearly 83% of his acquisitions, according to election officials.
Sunday’s legislative outcome and landslide victory will maintain control of the Attorney General and the Supreme Court, whose lawmakers have been elected by lawmakers.
The election was boycotted by several opposition leaders, further deepening the division between parties opposed to Maduro’s democratically elected government.
A major opposition group led by popular figure Maria Corina Machado had urged voters to stay in order to avoid justifying what she claimed was a “faaaaa” election.
Opposition candidates have just one governor out of the four who won the opposition in 2021 in the province of Codjedes, west of the capital Caracas.
Despite the division and boycott, voter turnout with 24 governors and 285 lawmakers selected was similar to the 2021 election.
