Cargo transport via Iran increased 26% in 11 months until February 18, reaching a total of 20 million tonnes (MT).
The report said it cited figures for the Republic of Iran (Irika), but according to Press TV, the port of Shahid Rajae, the largest port of Iranian Shahid Rajae, in the Persian Gulf, was responsible for 5.3 million MT of cargo that passed through Iranian territory in April.
It added that it had processed around 4.6 million MT of international cargo over the same period, crossing the Parviskhan border on the western border with Iraq.
The report states that freight transport through Iran is expected to exceed 22 million MT by the end of the current calendar year on March 20th.
It also quotes figures from the Iranian Railway Company, indicating that international freight transport through the country’s railway network increased by about 50% in the second half of the current calendar year, reaching an annual record of 2.4 million mt.
Iran said it expects to reach its 8 million MT target for international railway freight transport next year.
Cargo transport via Iran was only 13 million mt in 2022, when the country introduced new laws and regulations to promote the movement of international cargo through its territory.
This policy was consistent with the government’s efforts to create new sources of hard currency to offset the impact of US sanctions on oil exports.
A report by the research department of Iranian parliament shows that the country can earn around $8 billion a year from the transport of approximately 80 million MT of international cargo.
