In a television interview, Kazem Ghalibabadi referred to the extensive diplomatic efforts taken by Iran regarding the termination of Security Council resolution 2231.
He noted that the three countries have declared that UN Security Council Resolution 2231 has expired and that each country is no longer obligated to enforce the relevant sanctions.
The diplomat said the Iranian government had launched a wide-ranging diplomatic effort to counter the alleged duplicity of the West and the United States, and to rally support for Iran’s legal interpretation of the resolution’s expiration.
Mr. Gharibabadi highlighted the recent Non-Aligned Movement Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Uganda, where more than 121 Member States confirmed that resolution 2231 expires on 18 October, underscoring the importance of broad international support.
He also referred to a statement by 21 countries affiliated with the Friends of the United Nations Charter in New York, declaring that sanctions reimposed unilaterally by Western countries and the United States are legally invalid and that UN member states are under no obligation to implement them.
Ghalibabadi noted that the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had issued a similar statement, adding that future letters from Iran, China and Russia will formally inform the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council that Resolution 2231 has been terminated and the associated sanctions are non-binding.
The senior diplomat emphasized Iran’s continued efforts to build international consensus and ensure that the legal interpretation of the expiration of resolutions and the invalidity of sanctions imposed by Western countries is widely recognized.
He also addressed the impact on Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), noting that previously the IAEA Director-General submitted quarterly reports on Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA, but with the termination of Resolution 2231, such reports will no longer be required by the Board.
