TEHRAN – An Iranian delegation led by Secretary of the Department of the Environment (DOE) Shina Ansari will participate in the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), scheduled to be held from December 8 to 12 at the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, with the theme “Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet.”
In line with the expansion of environmental diplomacy, Ansari said the Ministry of Energy will attend the meeting and focus on the search for solutions to sand and dust storms in Southeast Asia and the fact that environmental issues should not be affected by unilateral and mandatory sanctions, ILNA reported.
Climate change and its impact on the country, such as rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and severe droughts, will also be another issue to be discussed, she added.
UNEA is the world’s highest environmental decision-making body. It was established in June 2012 as a result of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.
Since 2014, UNEA has held six meetings, with 105 resolutions addressing air pollution, biodiversity and health, development finance, plastic pollution, marine debris, environmental education, water management, nature-based solutions, sustainable consumption and production. Action has been accelerated on critical issues such as industrial production, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, climate change, chemicals and waste, the Science and Policy Committee for Pollution Prevention, illegal wildlife trade, and environmental protection in areas affected by armed conflict and disasters. Minerals and metals management, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, and more.
UNEA-7, held under the theme ‘Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet’, sends a strong message of accelerating sustainable solutions and effective responses for a safer and more resilient planet.
This theme recognizes that striving for a just, equitable and inclusive world depends on promoting sustainable development for the benefit of all, promoting sustained and inclusive economic growth, social development and environmental protection.
