Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to UNESCO, Ahmad Pakacci, on his side, highlighted the pivotal role of science in building bridges between nations and fostering global cooperation.
Hassan Falcisi, Secretary-General of Iran’s UNESCO National Committee, stressed the importance of strengthening national and international cooperation. He also highlighted the role of these chairs in addressing global challenges such as climate change, bioethics and artificial intelligence, and its ability to promote peaceful dialogue through scientific engagement.
Ieng Srong, head of the UNESCO Tehran office, also provided important insights into the role of UNESCO chairs. He describes them as more than mere academic research centres, focusing on the importance of addressing emerging global challenges. He touched on efforts to combine UNESCO chairs with funding sources and global research networks to maximize its impact and sustainability.
In her turn, Unit Win/UNESCO Chair Program Manager Prince emphasized the importance of global interaction and cooperation, particularly through the North-South cooperation model. She also emphasized that the social impact of UNESCO chairs goes beyond education and research and calls for more active participation of these chairs in global projects. She highlighted the host institution’s key role and its commitment, urging university leaders to actively support UNESCO chairs. Ms Prince also highlighted the need to enhance the communication and visibility of the chair through website development and continuous updates.
The event, which brought together the university’s president and UNESCO chairs, continued its capacity building session. This session provided the Chair with the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience. It also served as a constructive platform for tackling the challenges and investigating strategies to strengthen future impacts.
Important issues raised by the Chair during this session included budget constraints identified as the most important issue in the field. Due to economic restrictions, some chairs work with nonprofit organizations and NGOs. Additionally, one chair team emphasized the need to establish a legal framework for managing chair operations at the national level, particularly when providing policy advice.
The chairman also expressed his commitment to providing educational support to individuals living in conflict-affected areas.
As UNESCO chairs expand into new fields and strengthen their relationship with international organizations, Iran is suited to play an even more influential role in global scientific dialogue and policy development.
