Iran’s UN envoy Saeed Irabani made a statement in a letter dating back to the UN Security Council on Wednesday, news outlets reported.
The letter came in response to an ongoing drive by the UK, France and Germany aimed at restoring sanctions. With the campaign, the trio has pushed anti-Iranian resolutions forward to the UN nuclear watchdog alongside the United States to encourage a re-challenge of the ban.
The push coincides with accusations from Western allies that Iran is trying to acquire nuclear weapons. This is an allegation that Watchdog has never tested despite the most stringent inspections in history.
Irabani therefore denounced the Western campaign as “a legally unfounded and politically reckless act that has great uncertain consequences for regional and international peace, security and security.”
He repeated the previous warnings of the Islamic Republic, and said that it would consider a “proportional response,” including “starting the process of withdrawal from the NPT in accordance with Article X of the Convention.”
This article outlines the rights of political parties to withdraw from the treaty if “extraordinary events” put their best interests at stake.
The envoy also accused the European trio of falsely accusing Iran of being able to include the development of nuclear weapons.
Such an aspiration, he added, reflects “a deliberate attempt to manufacture a crisis.”
“Iran’s nuclear policy was clearly peaceful and rooted in both legal commitments under the NPT and religious, strategic, defensive doctrine banning weapons of mass destruction,” the officials argued.
Meanwhile, he argued that the Islamic Republic is committed to finding a negotiated solution that provides adequate assurance regarding the peaceful nature of the nuclear program.
