In response to a reporter’s question about the draft resolutions being prepared by the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom for the IAEA Board of Governors, Reza Najafi said these countries were trying to use their numerical majority on the Board to push through measures they were unable to achieve at the United Nations in New York.
Mr Najafi said imposing reporting obligations on the IAEA director-general under expired UN Security Council resolutions was “totally illegal and unjustified” and would likely complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts.
He added that these measures will not affect the implementation of Iran’s current nuclear safeguards, which he said have already been affected by what he described as US aggression, Israeli attacks, and the complicity of three European countries.
Najafi also called on all IAEA members to oppose unilateral actions by the United States and European countries, stressing that Iran reserves the right to respond appropriately to any illegal moves regarding its nuclear program.
On June 13, while Washington and Tehran were in the process of nuclear negotiations, Israel launched a blatant and unprovoked invasion of Iran. The Israeli attack sparked a 12-day war that left at least 1,064 people dead in the country, including military commanders, nuclear scientists and civilians.
The United States also entered the war by bombing three Iranian nuclear facilities in a serious violation of international law.
In response, Iranian forces targeted strategic locations throughout the occupied territories, as well as Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the largest US military base in West Asia.
On June 24, Iran successfully thwarted the invasion through successful retaliatory operations against both the Israeli regime and the United States.
