TEHRAN – A third hearing took place Tuesday in the lawsuit, with 400,000 Iranians claiming compensation from the US for their involvement in the 1953 coup.
According to the judiciary, the session took place at the branch 55 of the International Civil Court in Tehran, and was attended by many legal experts.
When launching the lawsuit, the judge said the lawsuit would attack more than 400,000 Iranian plaintiffs against the US government. “The plaintiffs are seeking material, moral and punitive damages for actions related to the 1953 coup,” he said.
The judge detailed that the court has presented numerous petitions from across the country, demanding compensation for damages arising. “This was the third hearing, and the court has now decided whether additional investigation or legal proceedings are required,” he declared in a major declaration of the court session.
The judge also referred to Iranian law and confirmed the jurisdiction of the courts to adjudicate the claim. He emphasized that the United States consistently infringes Iran’s legal immunity in its domestic courts. “We therefore have the right to take mutual legal action as well,” the judge explained, “we have “jurisdiction to consider the claims filed by Iranian plaintiffs against the US government.”
During the hearing, the lawyers on Ayaz argued that America’s involvement in Iran was intended to achieve full political control from the start. He said Washington not only designed the overthrow of the democratically elected government of the time, but also crushed the opposition by working with the Israeli Mossad to create the infamous Savak Intelligence Agency.
“The coup and the reinstallation of US-backed government have entered an era of Iran’s unparalleled authoritarian rule,” Ayaz added.
The 1953 coup, supported by the CIA and the UK MI6, led to the overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosadegu’s democratically elected government and strengthened the Pahlavi monarchy. Pahravi Shah eventually collapsed during the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
