Europe and the United States no longer have meaningful influence over Iran, Iranian strategic affairs expert Seyyed Mohammad Marandi said, arguing that decades of failed diplomacy, broken promises and ineffective pressure have steadily eroded Western credibility and influence in Iran.
Marandi said in an interview with Al Mayadeen that European attempts to use the JCPOA’s “snapback mechanism” to intimidate Iran and reinstate UN sanctions have been ineffective, adding that ordinary Iranians have suffered no economic consequences and that Iranian elites are aware of Europe’s lack of credibility.
He stressed that Iran has consistently kept its commitments under the nuclear deal, while the United States and Europe have repeatedly violated their obligations.
The Tehran University professor also criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), saying that Iran no longer trusts the agency due to past information leaks to the United States and “Israel,” while adding that the Iranian government will not share sensitive nuclear information until it is safe.
“The United States, the International Atomic Energy Agency, European countries and the Israeli regime have lost all influence,” he claimed.
Marandi also emphasized that Western pressure is becoming less effective, noting that sanctions, snapback mechanisms and threats of military action no longer threaten Iran, which is strengthening its alliances with Russia, China and other BRICS countries, further reducing Western influence.
He also criticized Europe’s subordination to US policy, accusing the West of maintaining an “imperialist mindset” and expecting other countries to follow its demands without question.
Citing the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the Iranian professor said European inaction and alignment with US policy were further undermining trust in Tehran.
“Europe and the United States can issue statements and resolutions at the United Nations or the IAEA, but they will have no impact on Iran,” Marandi concluded, arguing that Iranian policy is guided by national security priorities rather than Western threats and empty gestures.
