TEHRAN – The Iranian embassy in Tokyo strongly condemned US President Donald Trump’s recent comments acknowledging his leadership role in Israel’s invasion of Iran in June, calling it a “remorse” that exposes diplomatic facades covering up a planned campaign of violence against the Islamic Republic.
In a post on X, the embassy wrote that President Trump’s statement was “chilling evidence of the fact that the sham diplomacy was nothing more than a calculated deception to mask a secret plan of orchestrated violence against Iran.” He added: “The architects of this deception have waged a horrific disinformation campaign and are relentless in their efforts to conceal the reality.”
Trump’s comments, in which he claimed he was “largely responsible” for the attack on Israel, are the first time a US president has publicly acknowledged direct involvement in military operations against Iran. The 12-day offensive, which began on June 13 and ended with a ceasefire on June 24, targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, military facilities, residential areas, hospitals, and civilian infrastructure, including Tehran’s Evin prison.
Iran responded with Operation True Promise III, launching missile attacks on key strategic and security targets within the occupied territories.
In a subsequent post, the Iranian embassy in Tokyo said the long record of “betrayal, broken promises, duplicity, and disinformation” by the United States and its European allies recast the aggressor as the victim and provided a clear explanation for Iran’s distrust of the West. The report noted that despite Iran’s full compliance with international commitments (as confirmed by 15 IAEA reports), President Trump unilaterally withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed sweeping sanctions while the UN Security Council remained silent. It added that European signatories failed to honor their obligations under the agreement by refusing to normalize trade, instead aligning themselves with US pressure and provocative policies.
The embassy also condemned the West’s silence on Israel’s aggression against Iran and the subsequent US attack on Iranian facilities under IAEA safeguards, and accused three European countries – Germany, France and the UK – of further escalating tensions by invoking the so-called “snapback mechanism” to reinstate previously ended UN sanctions.
According to the statement, these actions collectively illustrate the Iranian government’s “deep and justified distrust” of the West, which it accuses of enabling Israeli violence and undermining diplomacy through misinformation and political manipulation.
On Saturday, Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir Saeed Iravani, sent a letter to the UN Security Council saying President Trump’s comments were “clear and irrefutable proof” of US leadership in the attack.
