TEHRAN – The speaker of the Iranian parliament firmly condemned the death and destruction in the Sudanese city of El Fasher and called for peace and security there.
“We strongly condemn the merciless killing of innocent people and the destruction of the city’s facilities and infrastructure in the Sudanese city of El Fasher,” Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said in a tweet on the X platform.
“The destruction of territorial integrity is to the detriment of the Sudanese people and neighboring countries,” he added.
“Peace, stability and security are the legitimate demands of the Sudanese people,” the parliamentarian explained.
After an 18-month siege of some 1.2 million people, the RSF claimed to have captured the last Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) stronghold in El Fasher, north of Darfur, last Sunday, as the United Nations issued a stern warning over reports of atrocities by the RSF.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) previously issued resolution 2736 calling for the lifting of the siege of El Fasher and the provision of humanitarian access to civilians in June 2024, but was unable to ensure full implementation of the resolution.
According to reports from the Sudan Doctors Network (SDN) and other sources, RSF has been involved in mass killings targeting patients and staff in Saudi hospitals, summary executions, including sexual violence against women and girls, and mass murders. According to Sudan’s military, about 2,000 people had been killed by Wednesday. Thousands of people also went missing.
Additionally, more than 26,000 people were evacuated from El Fasher in just two days, according to the United Nations. Those attempting to flee were reportedly pursued and killed by RSF forces.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the bloodshed and expressed concern over the unstable situation in El Fasher in a telephone conversation with Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohi El-Din Salem.
“In a phone call with my Sudanese counterpart, His Excellency Mohieldin Salem, I conveyed Iran’s deep sadness and concern over the tragic killing of innocent civilians in El Fasher and expressed solidarity between Iran and Sudan,” Araghchi said in a post on X.
Iran’s top diplomat has slammed those who classify terrorists as “good” and “evil,” saying they only want to secure their own interests. “Such deplorable double standards, long upheld by Western governments, cannot exist in 2025,” he added.
Mr. Araghchi reiterated that terrorism and violence against innocent people, in any form, anywhere in the world must be condemned.
This happened and the bloodshed and violence at El Fasel is well documented. Using satellite imagery and remote sensing data, Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Laboratory (HRL) reported that clumps of objects and discoloration on the ground were evidence of human bodies and pools of blood. No clusters or discoloration were present in images taken before the RSF infiltration, the report said.
Images of the murders and violence in El Fasher on social media have also drawn strong condemnation from the general public around the world.
Sudanese authorities have repeatedly said RSF receives unconditional support from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Khartoum took legal action against it at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in April. RSF is also said to be supported by the Israeli regime.
International affairs analyst Seyyed Reza Sadrolhosseini believes that the UAE and Israel, backed by the United States, are intervening in Sudan because they are focused on Sudan’s oil and gold resources. “Illicit gold exports from Sudan are increasing,” he told IRIB. Some reports say the UAE is the main destination for this “stolen” money. “The UAE is sending weapons and equipment to the RSF through neighboring countries such as Chad, Somalia and Libya, and the Zionist regime is also supporting the coup leaders through intermediaries,” the analyst claimed.
