TEHRAN – Esmail Bakaei, a spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, firmly condemned Tuesday’s terrorist attack in Pahargam, India, killing and wounding dozens of civilians, including foreigners.
Describing the attack as “a serious crime that violates all international legal norms and human rights principles,” Bakaei expressed solidarity with Tehran’s New Delhi in an official statement, expressing sadness to the victim’s families and wishing a prompt recovery for the injured survivors.
The spokesperson reiterated Iran’s “unwavering opposition to all forms of terrorism,” highlighting the need for “enhancing regional and global coordination to eradicate this tragedy and hold perpetrators accountable.”
He emphasized that Iran, as a “still defender of the multilateral counterterrorism framework,” will encourage immediate action to prosecute those behind the attack.
The attacks in the popular tourist destination of South Kashmir’s Pahargambaisalan Valley are said to be the most deadly strike against civilians in the subcontinent region since 2019.
Preliminary reports show at least 30 deaths and dozens of injuries.
Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Omar Abdullah called the incident “on an unprecedented scale” and the authorities continue to examine the figures of the final casualties compared to recent violence against civilians.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack on X, writing, “The people behind this heinous act will be brought to trial.”
