A report by Syrian news agency SANA on Tuesday revealed that discussions between Assad Hassan al-Shaibani and Israeli delegation have ruled out and enforced a ceasefire in the province of Druze Majority Sweida in southern Syria.
Sweida has suffered fierce fighting and serious casualties in recent months, with Israel bombing Damascus’ military headquarters under the pretext of supporting Druze Minority.
Tuesday’s meeting was a continuation of previous discussions, including one held between Al-Shaibani and Israeli Strategy Minister Rondahma in Azerbaijan in late July, as well as another meeting in Paris before it.
Israel carried out repeated attacks across Syrian territory last year after the collapse of former President Bashar al-Assad’s government. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the troops to push deep into Syrian territory and occupy some strategic locations.
On Monday, a group of Israeli settlers, including young children, went illegally to Syrian territory in blatant acts of invasion and sought to establish a new settlement on land currently occupied by Israeli forces.
The invasion occurred near the Arauna border town after the collapse of the Assad government in December 2024, when Israel deepened its ongoing continued occupation of South Syria.
They held a cornerstone ceremony and highlighted Israel’s escalating ambition to retreat only after planting signs for the settlement, named the former post base “Nave Habashan,” and to deepen Israeli occupation into Syria.
Since Assad’s expulsion, the Damascus regime has been effectively controlled by Heiat Taharil al-Sham (HTS), led by Abu Muhammad al-Jolani.
Rather than resisting the ongoing Israeli invasion, HTS’ overtures of inaction and normalization against Tel Aviv have encouraged Israeli forces to strengthen their profession and bombing campaigns.
Israeli forces are deployed in at least nine posts deep in southern Syria within the largely unsurveillanced buffer zone, citing the need to counter the threat of Takfiri. However, this deployment serves as a cover for a broader strategy of territorial expansion, both through military attacks and invasions of settlers.
The Israeli regime has also escalated relentless artillery bombardment on Syria’s military and civilian infrastructure, further destabilizing the region and exacerbating humanitarian suffering. These attacks systematically undermined Syria’s ability to resist the profession and defend its sovereignty.
