Israel’s occupation of Golan Heights has destabilized the security situation in Syria, a spokesman for the UN Human Rights Office said.
Thameen Al-Kheetan told Anadolu that Israel breached the 1974 liberation agreement by occupying the occupied territory beyond the Golan Buffer Zone, “doubling the population of the settlers of the occupied Golan Heights.”
Israel’s occupation and planning “may undermine Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and further destabilizing an already vulnerable security situation,” the spokesman said.
After the collapse of Bashar al-Assad government in December, Israel expanded its occupation of Golan Heights in Syria by seizing a demilitarized buffer zone that violated the 1974 liberation agreement with Syria. It also intensified airstrikes targeting Syrian military positions across the country.
Israel’s recent military advances in Golan Heights, which have been occupied since 1967, have elicited condemnation from the United Nations and several Arab countries.
