The Caglayan court was expected to decide whether to charge him or release him, his lawyer said after four nights of protest caused a severe crackdown on Turkey’s worst street mayhem for more than a decade, the AFP reported.
The popular opposition mayor, President Receptacle Erdogan’s biggest political rival, was arrested Wednesday just days before he was nominated as a candidate for the leading opposition CHP in the 2028 presidential election.
He claimed the graft and was taken into custody in connection with two probes “supporting terrorist organizations.” He charged with telling police on Saturday that he was “immoral and unfounded.”
The move against him sparked protests in Istanbul, which then spread to more than 55 provinces in 81 Turkey, causing a run-up battle with the police.
Police arrested 323 people after continuing massive protests late on Saturday, Home Minister Ali Yarikaya wrote to X.
