The 2025 Maritime Search and Rescue Joint Exercise (AZIREX-2025) was held for four days on the island of Boyuk Zira off the coast of Baku, and involved the army and the Revolutionary Guards Navy’s fleets, consisting of missile launchers named Peikhan (Arrow) and Sepal (Shield), the Revolutionary Guards destroyer Shahid Bashir, and a fleet of Revolutionary Guards ships. The military exercise was held to strengthen security and sustainable maritime exchanges in the Caspian Sea, as well as the relations between the Iranian Navy and the naval forces of the Caspian Sea littoral states, especially the Republic of Azerbaijan, in planning and implementing combined maritime rescue and rescue operations, as well as converging and coordinating joint actions between the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Other goals of the naval exercises included ensuring the safety of merchant ships and tankers in the Caspian Sea, achieving mutually acceptable methods for planning and conducting future joint exercises, and involving both countries’ militaries in ensuring friendly relations.
Iranian naval personnel and ships who were in Azerbaijan to participate in the AZIREX-2025 joint search and rescue exercise left Baku port on Saturday.
On October 15, ships and personnel of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy entered the territorial waters of Azerbaijan and arrived at the designated assembly point to participate in the AZIREX-2025 joint search and rescue exercise.
