News of his resignation come amid reports that he has his sights in the presidency, and South Korean media reports that the presidential election will begin on Friday, DW reported.
Han is considered a potential conservative standard bearer, and in early December 2024, power parties of major conservative people were confused following the imposition of martial law by then President Yoon Sook Yeol.
Han justified his decision in a broadcast briefing on Thursday. He said, “I finally decided to put my post down so that I can do what I can and do what I can to help overcome the crisis we are facing.”
“I’m on two paths before me. One is to complete the heavy responsibility I deal with now. The other is to take that responsibility and take on a heavier responsibility,” Han said.
South Korean law requires Finance Minister Choi Sang-Mok to serve as representative president.
