It is little clear about the ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump that dawn will break down in Israel and Iran.
Trump’s announcement came late Eastern Time on Monday hours after Iran launched a missile attack on a US military base in Qatar.
As the morning broke, Israel and Iran continued to trade strikes, with Iranian missiles raiding residential buildings in southern Israel killing at least three people, authorities said.
Here’s what you need to know:
Questions about the ceasefire: There is little detail on the conditions for the ceasefire that Qatar helped mediate. Trump said Monday evening the “full and total” ceasefire was “six hours,” about six hours since he made the announcement, which would be around 12am on Tuesday or 7am in Israel. Israel has not yet publicly commented whether it agreed to a ceasefire.
Iranian television claims a ceasefire “imposed” on Israel. Iranian state media announced Tuesday morning that a ceasefire was “imposed on the enemy” after the country’s military response to “US invasion.” The report did not give time to when the ceasefire would take place. A report on the state-run Iranian National Press Network said Trump had called for a ceasefire “in a way that would make him gging.” Meanwhile, Trump said of the peace, “Israel and Iran came to me.”
Missile launches continue: Iran’s emergency services say missile launches continue. The missiles were also seen in video fired through Jerusalem, and Israeli intercepts could be seen in Haifa.
Israeli Attack Tehran: Israel launched its own attack on Iran’s capital, Tehran, overnight, according to Iranian national media. CNN’s Fred Pleitgen in Tehran reported an anti-aircraft fire lit up the sky above the Iranian capital.
Iran hits a US base. A diplomatic gust of winds began after Iran launched a missile attack at U.S. Al-Udeid Air Force Base in Qatar. The base had been evacuated a few days ago, and the missile was successfully intercepted without reporting injuries or death. Two sources familiar with the issue said Iranian officials had given advance notice of the retaliatory attack. Diplomatic sources told CNN they hope that Iran’s retaliatory strike against the US will serve as an off-ramp for Iran’s nuclear sites, which have been prominently retaliated, to return to negotiations.
