The funds suspended at the University of Pennsylvania were not the results of a Title IX investigation launched by the Department of Education, a senior White House official told CNN.
Officials described the move as an “immediately active measure” to universities that the Department of Education identified for its investigation, including the University of Pennsylvania, San Jose State University and the Massachusetts Scholastic Athletics Association.
The suspension of approximately $175 million in funds came from the Department of Defense and Health and Human Services, the official added.
President Donald Trump received his bachelor’s degree from Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 after transferring from Fordham University.
UPENN’s response: The University of Pennsylvania said in a statement that it “has not received any official notices or details” regarding federal funding.
