In an interview with Time Magazine, the clip was aired on First Television in Belarus, so Lukashenko said that even in the final election of 2020 he was ready to step down, but changed his mind when he said giving up the post was kind of betrayal.
“To be honest, the second time in my life, I was already ready to step down during the previous election. “But they said, no, we’re not ready. And it was framed as if I was a traitor I wanted to escape. So I had to stay.”
Lukashenko also said he had no plans to make his son Nikolai his successor.
“No, he’s not a successor. I knew you were going to ask about this,” he said.
Speaking about the potential successor, Lukashenko wanted his successor to become a “rational and ordinary person.”
