The Maldives have banned Israelis from entering the country in protest of Israeli war with Gaza and protesting “decisive solidarity” with the Palestinians, Mee reported.
President Mohamed Muiz signed the law on Monday after it was passed by the people of Majlis of the Mardib Congress.
Muizzu’s cabinet first decided in June 2024 to ban all Israeli passport holders from the idyllic island nations until Israel halted its attack on Palestine, but legislative progress has stagnated.
The bill was announced at the Maldives Parliament in May 2024. This was announced by Meekail Ahmed Naseem, a MP for the Maldives Democrats, a major opposition party.
The Cabinet then decided to change the state’s laws to ban Israeli passport holders, including double citizens. After some fixes it passed over 300 days.
“This ratification reflects the government’s firm stance in responding to the ongoing genocide committed by Israel against the Palestinians,” Muzuz’s office said in a statement.
