A man suffered stab wounds after two groups clashed in a Morrison Street car park near Salamanca Place in Hobart around midnight Saturday, police said.
A 20-year-old man died from his injuries Sunday morning, and a 23-year-old man remains hospitalized and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Associated Press.
Police said this appears to be an “isolated incident” and may be linked to previous incidents involving individuals from each group.
“The two victims knew each other. We don’t know if the perpetrator knew them or not,” Lt. Mark Burke told reporters Sunday.
“We are examining a number of CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses to try to pinpoint the number of people involved.”
However, Burke emphasized the possibility of a targeted attack.
“It’s never okay for someone to be murdered in a public place, but we believe it was potentially targeted.
“It’s not like someone walked up to someone on the street and stabbed them.”
