The Kurdistan Region Interior Ministry announced that one civilian was killed and two others were injured in a shooting incident on the Gweel-Irbil road.
According to the ministry, it was reported that an alleged “rioter” opened fire on the roadside, resulting in casualties.
The announcement came just hours after Reuters reported, citing Iraqi security and medical sources, that security forces in the Kurdistan Region opened fire on Saturday during a protest in front of the Ranaz oil refinery on the road leading to Erbil, killing at least two people and wounding three others.
Security sources said the protesters were demanding job opportunities at the refinery when security guards responsible for guarding the facility opened fire on them.
The source added that one protester was killed in the shooting, as was the driver of a tanker truck who happened to be near the refinery.
