Thousands of Mauritans gathered in large sit-ins outside the Noagcott embassy on Saturday night in large sit-ins to protest Israeli ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and denounce US accomplices, according to the Middle East Monitor.
According to local news website Essirage, the protest was organized by a student initiative against Zionist invasion, attracting university students, politicians, doctors, civil society activists and the public.
Reciting the slogan and waving the Palestinian flag, demonstrators accused Washington of enabling the crime of Israeli occupation through financial, military and political support. Many have called on Mauritania authorities to expel the US ambassador and cut off diplomatic ties with Washington. Organizers said the protests would continue until the next morning.
The sit-ins were part of a broader solidarity effort, in line with the international call for Saturday’s global strike that protested Israel’s actions in Gaza. The Student Initiative, a non-governmental organisation that supports Palestinian rights, urged citizens to maintain pressure on the government and condemned the silence of Arab and Muslim states. The protesters were directly responsible for the increase in the number of civilians killed by Israel in Gaza.
Mushahid points out that while a widespread solidarity campaign with Gaza has continued in Mauritania since the beginning of the Israeli war of massacre, the tribes are competing to raise funds for the besieged Palestinians. The Mauritania tribe reportedly raised about $16 million in donations.
