Tjada D’Oyen McKenna, chief executive of the US-based aid group, called the announcement of Gaza’s hunger, “absolutely frightening, but not surprising.”
“This is the direct result of months of intentional restrictions on aid, destruction of Gaza’s food, health and water systems, and relentless artillery fire. This is an artificial catastrophe, completely preventable and completely merciless,” she said.
McKenna said Mercy Corps staff are facing dire circumstances.
“We see our team members being wasted. They stand on the food line, skip meals so that their kids can eat, risking their lives every day just to find bread and water,” she pointed out.
The chief of Mercy Corps said some items have already expired due to delays, while supplies last for 160,000 people stuck at the intersection.
“What we are witnessing in Gaza is the moral failure of the highest order. The world knows how to stop hunger. We need the will to act,” McKenna added.
