The Mexican president did not say where the lawsuit was filed. Google did not respond to a request for comment from the BBC.
On Thursday, the Republican-led House voted to officially rename the official name of the federal agency’s Gulf Coast.
On his first day in office in January, Donald Trump signed an executive order calling for the names of the waters to be renamed, claiming that the US is “doing most of the work there and that’s our job.”
However, Shanebaum’s government argues that Trump’s orders apply only to the US portion of the continental shelf.
“All we want is to comply with laws issued to the US government to comply,” she said.
